Nina

Curious, level-headed and a close observer. When a new animal or an unfamiliar behaviour appears she is visibly delighted, and the question she asks is usually the one the audience is already asking — why does it do that?

She came to the ocean through her mother, Yue'er. Studying it is her own decision, not an inherited dream. Her father was away on callouts for much of her childhood; after her mother died, the two of them moved to Moon Lagoon.

She carries the exploration and the wonder, and keeps the Ocean Journal. She is not a daughter to be protected — across the series she earns her competence on screen.

Haiyang 海阳

Steady, sparing with words, action before explanation. He does not perform expertise and he does not lecture. His worry shows up as checking the weather, laying out gear, servicing an engine — and waiting for Nina to come back.

He was away often when Nina was small. Yue'er set her own research aside for the family, and died at sea. Haiyang left the rescue service carrying that, and brought Nina to Moon Lagoon.

He runs the Blue Horizon Guest House and maintains ABU-07 and the rescue kit. Through him the series carries what the ocean can do to you: currents, depth, cold, and the procedure that gets you home.

Yue'er 月儿

She had research ambitions of her own, and gradually gave the work up for her family. She understood Haiyang's duty and rarely complained — which does not mean nothing was given up.

She died at sea. She is not a mystery, a secret mission or a withheld twist. She is simply how Nina understands the ocean, and the root of Haiyang's respect for it — and of his fear of it.

Observe first, approach second. Do not fear an animal because its shape is unfamiliar. Record only what you actually saw. Stay curious, and keep your distance.

Guanghai 广海

Hot-blooded and direct, running on instinct and frequently acting before thinking. He says he is only staying a while. The island has been his for years.

His arc runs from avoiding commitment to choosing to stay — the point is not being stuck somewhere, but understanding that staying can itself be a free choice.

Against Kaito he is the instinct half of the pair: he reads the water by feel, Kaito reads it by number.

Meteorologist

Kaito 海都

Calm, rational and data-first. He is good at predicting what the sea and sky will do next, and less good at the parts of people that cannot be calculated. He intended to stay briefly and never left.

His job in the series is conversion: turning wind, swell, timing and current into something the others can act on.

Haruko's daughter · surfer

Makoto 真琴

Direct and sharp, and unwilling to accept a vague adult answer. She loves Moon Lagoon, and has started to wonder whether she is allowed to leave it.

Loving a place does not have to mean never leaving it. Her relationship with Haruko is the one between going, and always having somewhere to come back to.

Makoto's mother · runs the izakaya

Haruko 春子

Warm, direct and practical. She knows when something needs to be said and when it is better to leave food and space. She is never sentimental and never performs being strong.

The izakaya is where the island reassembles at the end of a day. She is most of the reason Moon Lagoon feels like somewhere you can always come back to.

The island's only policeman

An Laotou 安老头

A round, comfortable old man, usually asleep in the police box, on a bench at the harbour, or in Haruko's izakaya. He looks like he is coasting.

He is not a comic incompetent, and he is not a hidden master with a legendary past. What he actually does is remember every person on the island, every boat, and the time each of them is due back.
